Psalms 62

Verses 1-12, “Truly my soul silently waits for God; From Him comes my salvation. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be greatly moved. How long will you attack a man? You shall be slain, all of you, Like a leaning wall and a tottering fence. They only consult to cast him down from his high position; They delight in lies; They bless with their mouth, But they curse inwardly. Selah. My soul, wait silently for God alone, For my expectation is from Him. He only is my rock and my salvation; He is my defense; I shall not be moved. In God is my salvation and my glory; The rock of my strength, And my refuge, is in God. Trust in Him at all times, you people; Pour out your heart before Him; God is a refuge for us. Selah. Surely men of low degree are a vapor, Men of high degree are a lie; If they are weighed on the scales, They are altogether lighter than vapor. Do not trust in oppression, Nor vainly hope in robbery; If riches increase, Do not set your heart on them. God has spoken once, Twice I have heard this: That power belongs to God. Also to You, O Lord, belongs mercy; For You render to each one according to his work.”

In times of distress and great need, our focus needs to be on our Rock and Salvation. Isaiah 40:31, “But those who wait on the Lord Shall renew their strength; They shall mount up with wings like eagles, They shall run and not be weary, They shall walk and not faint.”  When we wait upon Him, we will not be disappointed. Many grow weary of waiting, though, and take matters into their own hands. Not only do they miss out on the miraculous delivery of God, but they set things into motion that come with their own consequences. We cannot act faithlessly and expect God to be pleased with us. Only those who persist in faith through the hard times will reap the blessing.  Galatians 6:9, “And let us not grow weary while doing good, for in due season we shall reap if we do not lose heart.”

Sometimes, the more we are blessed with, the more we can start trusting in our abundance, serving the gifts we receive more than the Giver. It may happen subtlely, as our love for God becomes overshadowed by our love for things and love for self. This is a trap that no one thinks they are falling into, which is why the Bible refers to it as a snare.  I Timothy 6:9‭-‬11, “But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown men in destruction and perdition. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil, for which some have strayed from the faith in their greediness, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows. But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, gentleness.” Rather than pursuing material increase, which can trap us and is only temporary, we should be pursuing righteousness, which has greater eternal value.

  1. As Christians, the Lord needs to be the one we go to and rely on for everything! He has full control over every situation in our life, and over everything we receive or have taken away. God provides for those who are in His wil, trusting Him daily. Some times, it is tempting to start trusting in what the Lord has provided for us rather than trusting in Him! We start to worship the vessel and not the potter who made it! Isaiah 29:16- "Surely you have things turned around! Shall the potter be esteemed as the clay; For shall the thing made say of him who made it, “He did not make me”? Or shall the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”? We need to remember that we are only humans and God is our creator! We should be worshiping Him rather than being prideful and trusting in our own abilities!

We also need to wait on Him, not being moved by other men! When we attend upon the rock and are grounded by Him, we will not be moved. We start to stray when we aren't anchored by Him...when we start to reason with our flesh instead of going to the word of God! Many so called christians have done this! They started using their own reasoning, and as a result, they are far of track but don't even release it! Hebrews 6:19‭-‬20- "This hope we have as an anchor of the soul, both sure and steadfast, and which enters the Presence behind the veil, where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus, having become High Priest forever according to the order of Melchizedek."

When we are walking in the Lord's will for our lives, relying on Him, He will take care of us! We can find comfort in that, knowing that He will provide and He will ultimately prevail over our enemies! He is the ONLY one who we should be placing our faith in, as He is the only one worthy! No other god here on this earth has the power that our Lord Jesus Christ does! People place their faith in vain!

In this psalm, david is speeking of him waiting for God, and relying on Him for everything. God is his rock and salvation. He is his defence.

As Christians we have to fully rely on God. He should be our rock, salvation, and defence. In our hard times we should be looking to Him for refuge. He should be our everything. Without God we would be nothing but a mess. If we look at everyone around us, who doesn't have God, their lives are meaningless. They are unhappy and nothing will ever make them happy without God. We as christians should be different from the world. We should be glad and joyful, knowing where we are going. We should be silently waiting for God. Acting as though He could come at any moment. Living our lives filled with the holy spirit and having the joy of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 9

Paul feels the need to defend his calling and his position of authority among the Corinthians, due to the fact that he is being examined. Ironically, his decision to not take support from the church, which should have earned him even more respect, has done the opposite causing his legitimacy as an apostle to be called into question. He makes the point that those who labor spiritually for the Corinthians have the right to eat and drink at their expense, and should expect the same support for their believing wife if they choose to bring one along as part of their ministry.  Certainly if others have been supported by them, Paul has even more right, being their spiritual father so to speak. I Corinthians 9:12, "If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ." Paul does not want to be accused of fulfilling his duty out of financial obligation, and so to demon...

1 Timothy 6

Those of us who are under authority should be respectful so that outsiders will not witness our behavior and blaspheme God or His word. Although slavery has been abolished in America, we still have employers, and our jobs should be done unto the Lord so that our hard work will be to the glory of God. Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Some Christians believe that they can relax on these standards if they work for a Christian boss, but actually the opposite is true. We should serve them even harder knowing that a brother or sister will be benefiting from our labors. Having been employed in ministry I was able to witness firsthand how others served their Christian bosses. Many would show up late, leave early, miss meetings, and produce mediocre to poor quality work as though it were acceptable to do so. If we bear the name of Jesus, we should stand out for our quality of performance and our et...

2 Corinthians 2

The letter Paul has written was out of love for the Corinthians, but was anguishing for him to write.  Choosing to send a letter rather than return to visit them on his way back through from Macedonia, was to avoid another occurrence of the first visit.  We can assume that the first visit was troubling for Paul, being their spiritual father so to speak, to see the church in the state it was in, requiring him to rebuke them harshly for their errors.  Much the same as when we are grieved when someone close to us goes astray (like our children), causing the need for strong words and discipline. Paul had sorrow over those whom he wanted to have joy.  Verse 4, “For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears,  not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.” The intention of the letter was not to bring them grief, but to correct them in love and bring about a change of heart and...
