Psalms 131

Verses 1-3, “Lord, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the Lord From this time forth and forever.”

When we are blinded by pride, we tend to think more highly of ourselves than we ought to, and are in a position to be humbled by God. Romans 12:3‭-‬5, “For I say, through the grace given to me, to everyone who is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think, but to think soberly, as God has dealt to each one a measure of faith. For as we have many members in one body, but all the members do not have the same function, so we, being many, are one body in Christ, and individually members of one another.”  Even our saving faith is a gift from God, which gives us no reason to boast.  If God has blessed you more than others with spiritual gifts... that's great, but remember that they are to be used for the benefit of the entire body anyway.

David did not concern himself with things that were beyond his present situation, and learned to be content right where God had him. When we want more than what we have, or desire for greater position in life, it can lead to discontentment, which is sin. Through your thoughts and actions, you are expressing that God is not enough for you, and you need more. Hebrews 13:5, “Let your conduct be without covetousness; be content with such things as you have. For He Himself has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.' ”  Covetousness is a sin that spills over and affects those around you. This is why we are told to avoid these people. I Corinthians 5:11, “But now I have written to you not to keep company with anyone named a brother, who is sexually immoral, or covetous, or an idolater, or a reviler, or a drunkard, or an extortioner— not even to eat with such a person.”  Unfortunately, many will ignore this warning, and hang out with these people anyway. Because they remain willfully ignorant and slowly drift over time, the spiritual damage will be done by the time they even notice... and may even be too late to correct.

  1. “LORD, my heart is not haughty, Nor my eyes lofty. Neither do I concern myself with great matters, Nor with things too profound for me. Surely I have calmed and quieted my soul, Like a weaned child with his mother; Like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, hope in the LORD From this time forth and forever.” Psalms‬ ‭131:1-3‬

This psalmest is speaking to the Lord of what he is and isn't. He first states, that hi humble. He does say this in a proud way, but an oniest way. He talks about how he is content.

Many so called christians today do not possess these qualities. People are proud, thinking that they deserve a special positions and respsect, within the church. People think that they should be used mightly by God and that they know more than anyone else things concerning God. We need to be careful, that we aren't or become like one of these people because the Lord will humble us and we won't be used greatly by God. We should be content wherever he Lord calls us in life, not being discontent. It is a blessing and honor that we even get to serve the Lord no matter how big or small.

  2. God commands us to be humble and to become as little children to come to Him. God resists the proud, but gives grace to those who are humble! Humility is required to admit we need a savior to begin with! Many people are too prideful to admit that they are sinners and need salvation! That is the first step in coming to God! If you can't humble yourself and admit your wrong, you can't receive God's free gift! After that initial step, God requires humility throughout our walk. We will still fall short, as we are only human, and we will still need to come to God with a humble heart! We should not be like the Pharisee who tries to proclaim their own greatness to God! Luke‬ ‭18:10-14‬- “Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector. The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, ‘God, I thank You that I am not like other men—extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this tax collector. I fast twice a week; I give tithes of all that I possess.’ And the tax collector, standing afar off, would not so much as raise his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, ‘God, be merciful to me a sinner!’ I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”
    ‭‭
In order to be used by God, we need to be humble and give all the glory to God! God will test us as believers, strengthening our faith and breaking down our pride. We need to be at a place where we surrender everything to God because we know that we don't have control! We need to submit to His will, crucifying our flesh daily! Galatians‬ ‭5:24-25‬- “And those who are Christ’s have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”

1 Corinthians 9

Paul feels the need to defend his calling and his position of authority among the Corinthians, due to the fact that he is being examined. Ironically, his decision to not take support from the church, which should have earned him even more respect, has done the opposite causing his legitimacy as an apostle to be called into question. He makes the point that those who labor spiritually for the Corinthians have the right to eat and drink at their expense, and should expect the same support for their believing wife if they choose to bring one along as part of their ministry.  Certainly if others have been supported by them, Paul has even more right, being their spiritual father so to speak. I Corinthians 9:12, "If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ." Paul does not want to be accused of fulfilling his duty out of financial obligation, and so to demon...

1 Timothy 6

Those of us who are under authority should be respectful so that outsiders will not witness our behavior and blaspheme God or His word. Although slavery has been abolished in America, we still have employers, and our jobs should be done unto the Lord so that our hard work will be to the glory of God. Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Some Christians believe that they can relax on these standards if they work for a Christian boss, but actually the opposite is true. We should serve them even harder knowing that a brother or sister will be benefiting from our labors. Having been employed in ministry I was able to witness firsthand how others served their Christian bosses. Many would show up late, leave early, miss meetings, and produce mediocre to poor quality work as though it were acceptable to do so. If we bear the name of Jesus, we should stand out for our quality of performance and our et...

2 Corinthians 2

The letter Paul has written was out of love for the Corinthians, but was anguishing for him to write.  Choosing to send a letter rather than return to visit them on his way back through from Macedonia, was to avoid another occurrence of the first visit.  We can assume that the first visit was troubling for Paul, being their spiritual father so to speak, to see the church in the state it was in, requiring him to rebuke them harshly for their errors.  Much the same as when we are grieved when someone close to us goes astray (like our children), causing the need for strong words and discipline. Paul had sorrow over those whom he wanted to have joy.  Verse 4, “For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears,  not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.” The intention of the letter was not to bring them grief, but to correct them in love and bring about a change of heart and...
