2 Chronicles 30

Verses 1-5, “And Hezekiah sent to all Israel and Judah, and also wrote letters to Ephraim and Manasseh, that they should come to the house of the Lord at Jerusalem, to keep the Passover to the Lord God of Israel. For the king and his leaders and all the assembly in Jerusalem had agreed to keep the Passover in the second month. For they could not keep it at the regular time, because a sufficient number of priests had not consecrated themselves, nor had the people gathered together at Jerusalem. And the matter pleased the king and all the assembly. So they resolved to make a proclamation throughout all Israel, from Beersheba to Dan, that they should come to keep the Passover to the Lord God of Israel at Jerusalem, since they had not done it for a long time in the prescribed manner.”

Now that the temple had been cleansed and restored, it was time to get back to remembering God at the prescribed times. The Passover was a reminder of God's deliverance and had not been celebrated in quite some time. Although they normally kept it in the first month, the priests were not consecrated nor the people gathered until the second month. Hezekiah not only invited Judah, but all Isreal, to keep the Passover as commanded by God. We are commanded to remember God through communion. Our temple must first also be cleansed before we partake.  I Corinthians 11:26‭-‬29, “For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes. Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks this cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord. But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread and drink of the cup. For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.”

Verses 6-12, “Then the runners went throughout all Israel and Judah with the letters from the king and his leaders, and spoke according to the command of the king: 'Children of Israel, return to the Lord God of Abraham, Isaac, and Israel; then He will return to the remnant of you who have escaped from the hand of the kings of Assyria. And do not be like your fathers and your brethren, who trespassed against the Lord God of their fathers, so that He gave them up to desolation, as you see. Now do not be stiff-necked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves to the Lord; and enter His sanctuary, which He has sanctified forever, and serve the Lord your God, that the fierceness of His wrath may turn away from you. For if you return to the Lord, your brethren and your children will be treated with compassion by those who lead them captive, so that they may come back to this land; for the Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn His face from you if you return to Him.' So the runners passed from city to city through the country of Ephraim and Manasseh, as far as Zebulun; but they laughed at them and mocked them. Nevertheless some from Asher, Manasseh, and Zebulun humbled themselves and came to Jerusalem. Also the hand of God was on Judah to give them singleness of heart to obey the command of the king and the leaders, at the word of the Lord.”

The Lord is merciful and gracious, and promised to return to the Jews if they would return to Him. Likewise, if we seek God, He will not hide from us, unless of course we are still in sin.  James 4:8‭-‬10, “Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double-minded. Lament and mourn and weep! Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”  The runners warned the Jews not to be stiff necked regarding their sin, because their current situation was a result of their fathers doing just that.  You may think you can have your way and God will have to accept you as you are, but that couldn't be further from the truth. Cleanse yourself, then humbly approach your God.

Verses 13-20, “Now many people, a very great assembly, gathered at Jerusalem to keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread in the second month. They arose and took away the altars that were in Jerusalem, and they took away all the incense altars and cast them into the Brook Kidron. Then they slaughtered the Passover lambs on the fourteenth day of the second month. The priests and the Levites were ashamed, and sanctified themselves, and brought the burnt offerings to the house of the Lord. They stood in their place according to their custom, according to the Law of Moses the man of God; the priests sprinkled the blood received from the hand of the Levites. For there were many in the assembly who had not sanctified themselves; therefore the Levites had charge of the slaughter of the Passover lambs for everyone who was not clean, to sanctify them to the Lord. For a multitude of the people, many from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun, had not cleansed themselves, yet they ate the Passover contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah prayed for them, saying, 'May the good Lord provide atonement for everyone who prepares his heart to seek God, the Lord God of his fathers, though he is not cleansed according to the purification of the sanctuary.' And the Lord listened to Hezekiah and healed the people.”

Eating the Passover in an unclean state was unlawful and disobedient to God's command. But there was a multitude of people who were not consecrated and ate in ignorance, with hearts that were truly seeking God. Hezekiah prayed for these people, and the Lord was gracious and healed them. We are all guilty of committing sins, even those done in ignorance. However, once you become enlightened with the truth, you are held to a higher level of accountability. Luke 12:47‭-‬48, “And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.  But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more.”

When people show up at church truly seeking God, you cannot expect them to obey the Word in all matters. But as they grow in knowledge and truth, they become convicted of sins and turn from them. Sometimes those who have been walking some time judge the newcomers according to their ways, but ignore the fact that they have sin in their life that they know they ought not to have. This type of hypocritical judging is really bad and judgement is worse for these guys. Hebrews 10:26‭-‬29, “For if we sin willfully after we have received the knowledge of the truth, there no longer remains a sacrifice for sins, but a certain fearful expectation of judgment, and fiery indignation which will devour the adversaries. Anyone who has rejected Moses’ law dies without mercy on the  testimony of two or three witnesses. Of how much worse punishment, do you suppose, will he be thought worthy who has trampled the Son of God underfoot, counted the blood of the covenant by which he was sanctified a common thing, and insulted the Spirit of grace?”

Verses 21-27, “So the children of Israel who were present at Jerusalem kept the Feast of Unleavened Bread seven days with great gladness; and the Levites and the priests praised the Lord day by day, singing to the Lord, accompanied by loud instruments. And Hezekiah gave encouragement to all the Levites who taught the good knowledge of the Lord; and they ate throughout the feast seven days, offering peace offerings and making confession to the Lord God of their fathers. Then the whole assembly agreed to keep the feast another seven days, and they kept it another seven days with gladness. For Hezekiah king of Judah gave to the assembly a thousand bulls and seven thousand sheep, and the leaders gave to the assembly a thousand bulls and ten thousand sheep; and a great number of priests sanctified themselves. The whole assembly of Judah rejoiced, also the priests and Levites, all the assembly that came from Israel, the sojourners who came from the land of Israel, and those who dwelt in Judah. So there was great joy in Jerusalem, for since the time of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel, there had been nothing like this in Jerusalem. Then the priests, the Levites, arose and blessed the people, and their voice was heard; and their prayer came up to His holy dwelling place, to heaven.”

Those who came from Isreal to celebrate the Passover had great gladness, probably because it was the first time they had ever experienced worship in this way. There is something special about the newness of love, especially our love for God. Unfortunately, people lose this love when their spirit gets chocked out by the world. Some of us just grow weary from the battles over time and become complacent. This state is not okay, and the Lord rebukes and warns concerning it. Revelation 2:4‭-‬5, “Nevertheless I have this against you, that you have left your first love.  Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place—unless you repent.”  If you find yourself in this same situation, you know you can cleanse yourself and draw near to God, and experience His love once again.

  1. In this chapter, Hezekiah called all of Israel to observe the passover. The passover was a remembrance of what God had done for them, and His deliverance from the land of Egypt. For years now, the passover had not been kept by Israel, and now the remnant was called to come and observe it. Hezekiah sent letters to all the tribes, calling them to return to the Lord and not be like their fathers. They were witnesses of the northern tribe falling a part because they forsook the Lord. There was a revival among the southern tribes to return to the Lord and make Him the first priority.

As Christians, we should remember what the Lord has done for us. There are many times when we may get caught up in little cares of this world, and we should constantly be reminded of all the grace and mercy that the Lord has shown us. We don't deserve to know Him! We need to be careful that we always purpose to seek God first. When we don't, that is how we can get our focus shifted, and forget what God has done for us. We start focusing on ourselves, and not God! May we be like king Hezekiah who encouraged to seek God and put him first!

Hezekiah encouraged the small amount of people from the northern kingdom, and many mocked him and laughed at the message. Only a remnant of this small amount actually obeyed the Lord and came to the feast. Often times, we may think that there aren't many true Christians out there, and sometimes there's even less than we thought! God said that the road would be narrow, and FEW would find it!

The Israelites prepared for the passover, and the land of Judah was cleansed. This feast included the southern kingdom of Israel and the few people from the northern kingdom. These people from the northern part of Israel didn't know how to cleanse themselves and worship God properly. Hezekiah prayed for them, that God would show them mercy. It is one thing if you have no idea that you are sinning against God, and are ignorant. For example, when the Philistines put the ark of the covenant on a cart, God didn't punish them because they had no idea what the law was. However, the Israelites knew. As Christians, we know what is right and wrong. We have no excuse!

Luke 12:47‭-‬48- "And that servant who knew his master’s will, and did not prepare himself or do according to his will, shall be beaten with many stripes.  But he who did not know, yet committed things deserving of stripes, shall be beaten with few. For everyone to whom much is given, from him much will be required; and to whom much has been committed, of him they will ask the more."

As a result of this feast, they desired to go on for another seven days! Worship and spending time with the Lord should never be a burden! We should want to spend even more time with Him! We should also never regret taking time to spend with the Lord. This is our most important relationship here on this earth, and we need to make sure we put God first in everything we do!

1 Corinthians 9

Paul feels the need to defend his calling and his position of authority among the Corinthians, due to the fact that he is being examined. Ironically, his decision to not take support from the church, which should have earned him even more respect, has done the opposite causing his legitimacy as an apostle to be called into question. He makes the point that those who labor spiritually for the Corinthians have the right to eat and drink at their expense, and should expect the same support for their believing wife if they choose to bring one along as part of their ministry.  Certainly if others have been supported by them, Paul has even more right, being their spiritual father so to speak. I Corinthians 9:12, "If others are partakers of this right over you, are we not even more? Nevertheless we have not used this right, but endure all things lest we hinder the gospel of Christ." Paul does not want to be accused of fulfilling his duty out of financial obligation, and so to demon...

1 Timothy 6

Those of us who are under authority should be respectful so that outsiders will not witness our behavior and blaspheme God or His word. Although slavery has been abolished in America, we still have employers, and our jobs should be done unto the Lord so that our hard work will be to the glory of God. Matthew 5:16, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." Some Christians believe that they can relax on these standards if they work for a Christian boss, but actually the opposite is true. We should serve them even harder knowing that a brother or sister will be benefiting from our labors. Having been employed in ministry I was able to witness firsthand how others served their Christian bosses. Many would show up late, leave early, miss meetings, and produce mediocre to poor quality work as though it were acceptable to do so. If we bear the name of Jesus, we should stand out for our quality of performance and our et...

2 Corinthians 2

The letter Paul has written was out of love for the Corinthians, but was anguishing for him to write.  Choosing to send a letter rather than return to visit them on his way back through from Macedonia, was to avoid another occurrence of the first visit.  We can assume that the first visit was troubling for Paul, being their spiritual father so to speak, to see the church in the state it was in, requiring him to rebuke them harshly for their errors.  Much the same as when we are grieved when someone close to us goes astray (like our children), causing the need for strong words and discipline. Paul had sorrow over those whom he wanted to have joy.  Verse 4, “For out of much affliction and anguish of heart I wrote to you, with many tears,  not that you should be grieved, but that you might know the love which I have so abundantly for you.” The intention of the letter was not to bring them grief, but to correct them in love and bring about a change of heart and...
